The Ultimate Senior Year Checklist for Sacramento Seniors. Senior year is finally here — and somehow it already feels like there are a million things to remember.
Senior sunrise. Homecoming. College applications. Senior pictures. Yearbook deadlines. FAFSA. Scholarships. Cap and gown. Prom. Graduation announcements. And somewhere in the middle of all of that, you’re also supposed to actually enjoy senior year.
As a Sacramento senior photographer AND a mom who has lived through senior year with my own kids, I know how quickly this year moves. That’s why I created this Senior Year Checklist for Sacramento seniors and their parents — one place to keep track of the big deadlines, little traditions and moments you don’t want to miss.
Every high school has different dates and requirements, so always double-check your school’s official calendar and counseling office. But this will give you a really good place to start.
Bookmark it, send it to your senior, and come back throughout the year.
Let’s make sure you don’t miss the good stuff.
AUGUST + SEPTEMBER: Start Senior Year Strong
The first few weeks of senior year are exciting, busy and honestly a little emotional — especially for Mom.
Before the year gets away from you, get organized.
Your Beginning-of-Senior-Year Checklist
- Take ALL the pictures at Senior Sunrise.
- Check your school’s senior calendar and save important dates in your phone.
- Find out your school’s yearbook portrait requirements and deadline.
- Schedule your senior pictures if you haven’t already.
- Make a list of colleges, trade schools, programs or other post-graduation options you’re considering.
- Create a Common App account if you’re applying to colleges that use it.
- Start a scholarship folder on your computer.
- Ask teachers or counselors for recommendation letters EARLY if you’ll need them.
- Make sure you know your graduation requirements and aren’t missing a class or credit.
- Attend your last first football game, rally, dance or fall event.
- Take a first-day-of-senior-year picture. Yes, even if Mom makes you.
- Start thinking about Homecoming!
If you’re applying to college, this is also a good time to start gathering the information you’ll need for applications: your transcript, activities, academic honors, test information if applicable, and a list of application requirements for each school.

And seniors — you do NOT need to know exactly what you’re doing with the rest of your life in August.
Seriously.
Have a plan for what needs to get done right now and give yourself permission to figure out the rest as you go.
Don’t Wait Too Long to Schedule Your Senior Pictures
Senior pictures are one of those things that can sneak up on families.
September feels early.
Then suddenly it’s November.
Then the holidays happen.
And before you know it, Mom is saying, “WAIT. WE STILL NEED SENIOR PICTURES.”
If professional senior portraits are important to your family, get your session on the calendar early.
Fall is one of the busiest seasons for Sacramento senior pictures, especially September through November.
And remember — senior pictures aren’t the same thing as your school’s yearbook portrait.
Your yearbook photo checks a box.
Your senior session gets to actually tell your story.
Bring the varsity jacket you’ve worn for four years. Your baseball glove. Your guitar. Cowboy boots. Your car. Dance shoes. College gear when the time comes. Or just bring the clothes that feel the most like YOU.

SEPTEMBER + OCTOBER: Applications, Homecoming + Fall Memories
Now senior year is officially moving.
For many seniors, September and October are when college applications start becoming real.
If college is part of your plan, don’t try to keep every deadline in your head.
Fall Senior Checklist
- Finalize your college list.
- Write down the application deadline for EACH school.
- Note which schools require additional essays or supplemental questions.
- Start drafting your personal essay.
- Request recommendation letters.
- Order transcripts if required.
- Research scholarships.
- Attend college fairs or campus tours when possible.
- Keep your grades up — senior year still counts!
- Go to Homecoming.
- Take pictures before the dance.
- Go to the football games.
- Participate in Senior Night if you’re an athlete, performer or involved in an activity.
- Save programs, tickets and little keepsakes from your final year.
For seniors using Common App, the 2026–27 application season is already open. Don’t assume every college requires the same materials or has the same deadline. Check each school’s requirements individually.

One Little Mom Tip
Create one senior-year folder.
It can be an actual box or a folder somewhere safe in your house.
Throw in the Homecoming ticket. Senior Night program. Acceptance letters. Newspaper clippings. Awards. Notes. Graduation announcements. Random little things that don’t seem important right now.
You don’t have to scrapbook anything.
Just SAVE IT.
I promise those little things are going to mean more later than you think.
NOVEMBER + DECEMBER: Deadlines, Traditions + The Last Holiday Season
This part of senior year can get BUSY.
College application deadlines are approaching for many students, fall sports are wrapping up, winter activities are starting and everyone is heading into the holidays.
Take care of the important stuff — but don’t let the checklist become the whole year.
Your November + December Checklist
- Submit applications with fall or early deadlines.
- Check application portals after submitting.
- Make sure transcripts and recommendation letters have been received when required.
- Continue applying for scholarships.
- Start researching financial aid.
- Check your school’s cap and gown ordering information.
- Order your yearbook if you haven’t already.
- Check senior ad/recognition ad deadlines if your school offers them.
- Attend the last holiday events at your high school.
- Take pictures with your friends.
- Make time for family during your last holiday season before graduation.
- Back up the photos and videos you’ve taken so far this year.
And Mom?
Take pictures that have NOTHING to do with an official senior event.
Take the picture of him sitting at the kitchen counter.
Take the picture of her getting ready for school.
Take the picture of their backpack thrown by the door.
Take pictures of the ordinary stuff.
Those are the things that change without anyone noticing.
JANUARY: Hello, Graduation Year!
There is something about January that makes graduation suddenly feel VERY close.
Your senior isn’t graduating “next year” anymore.
They’re graduating this year.
This is a great month to reset, look at what’s coming and make sure nothing important slipped through the cracks during the fall.
January Senior Checklist
- Review graduation requirements with your counselor.
- Check the status of college applications.
- Continue scholarship applications.
- Work on financial aid forms.
- Make sure your cap and gown has been ordered.
- Check yearbook deadlines.
- Start thinking about graduation announcements.
- Schedule spring senior pictures if you haven’t taken them yet.
- Start planning spring break.
- Look ahead at Prom dates.
- Check spring sports and Senior Night dates.
- Parents: start thinking about a graduation party if you’re having one.
This is also when I would start making one master family calendar for spring.
Because April and May?
They are CRAZY.
Put EVERYTHING on it.
Prom. Sports. Banquets. Senior awards. College visits. Senior activities. Photos. Graduation rehearsal. Graduation. Parties.
You’ll be glad you did.
FEBRUARY + MARCH: Decisions Start Getting Real
Spring is coming, and this is when senior year starts moving FAST.
College decisions may be arriving. Seniors heading into trades, community college, military service or the workforce may be finalizing plans. Spring sports begin. Prom is around the corner.
And graduation starts feeling very real.
Late-Winter Senior Checklist
- Keep checking college and program portals.
- Compare financial aid offers carefully.
- Continue applying for scholarships.
- Complete required financial aid forms by the deadlines that apply to you.
- Visit your top schools if possible.
- Research housing if you’ll be moving away.
- Start talking realistically about college budgets and expenses.
- Schedule any final senior portrait needs.
- Start planning graduation announcements.
- Begin gathering addresses for graduation announcements.
- Shop for Prom before everything is picked over.
- Schedule hair, makeup, nails or other Prom appointments early.
- Order graduation party supplies if you’re hosting a party.
For California students, financial-aid deadlines and requirements can change depending on the type of aid and application, so use the California Student Aid Commission as your official source rather than relying on a date you saw on social media.

And What If College Isn’t Your Plan?
I want this on the checklist because I think seniors need to hear it.
College is one path after high school.
It is not the only successful one.
Maybe you’re headed to community college.
Maybe it’s trade school.
Maybe you’re joining the military.
Maybe you’re starting an apprenticeship.
Maybe you already have a job lined up.
Maybe you’re starting a business.
Maybe you’re taking a gap year.
Maybe you’re still figuring it out.
Your senior year is still worth celebrating.
Spring can get LOUD with college acceptance posts, commitment announcements and everyone asking, “Where are you going next year?”
You do not need to feel behind because your answer looks different from someone else’s.
You’re graduating from high school.
That’s a pretty big deal all by itself.
APRIL: This Is Where Senior Year Hits Fast-Forward
If January through March felt busy, just wait.
April is when senior year starts becoming a blur of dresses, tuxes, sports, college decisions, graduation announcements, banquets and about 400 emails from the school.
April Senior Checklist
- Make your final college or post-graduation decision when your deadlines require it.
- Order college gear if you want it for announcement photos.
- Send graduation announcements.
- Finalize graduation party plans.
- Confirm Prom plans.
- Attend Senior Night and spring activities.
- Take cap and gown pictures.
- Take college announcement pictures.
- Make sure you know graduation rehearsal requirements.
- Confirm graduation ticket information.
- Check that all school fees, books and equipment are handled.
- Finish scholarship applications that are still open.
- Parents: book restaurants or celebration plans EARLY.
- SENIORS: take pictures with your friends.
And I mean LOTS of them.
You will never again have this exact group of people in this exact place at this exact age.
Take the picture.
MAY: Soak. It. In.
May is emotional.
One minute you’re worried about Prom.
The next you’re putting on a cap and gown.
This is when I want seniors — and especially moms — to stop looking at the checklist every once in a while and just LOOK AROUND.
This is it.
May Senior Checklist
- Go to Prom.
- Take too many pictures.
- Attend awards nights and senior celebrations.
- Finish your final assignments.
- Return school books, uniforms, Chromebooks or equipment.
- Pick up your cap and gown.
- Double-check graduation rehearsal.
- Confirm graduation tickets.
- Take photos in your cap and gown.
- Take photos with your favorite teachers and coaches.
- Take pictures at your school.
- Take pictures with your best friends.
- Attend Senior Sunset if your school has one.
- Write thank-you notes for scholarships and graduation gifts.
- Pack tissues for Mom.
And parents — get in some pictures.
Please.
Your senior doesn’t need 700 photographs of themselves graduating and zero photographs with the people who helped get them there.
Hand your phone to somebody.
Get next to your kid.
Take the picture.
JUNE: Graduation + One Really Big Goodbye
You made it.
The homework.
The early mornings.
The late practices.
The missing assignments.
The packed lunches.
The dances.
The games.
The college applications.
The “WHAT ARE YOU WEARING?” arguments.
The senior pictures.
All of it.
Graduation Checklist
- Charge everyone’s phones the night before.
- Bring graduation tickets.
- Leave WAY earlier than you think you need to.
- Bring flowers if you want them for photos.
- Take pictures BEFORE graduation when everyone still looks put together.
- Get a family picture.
- Get pictures with grandparents.
- Get pictures with siblings.
- Take a photo in front of the school.
- Celebrate the heck out of your senior.
- Back up all of your senior-year photos.
- Print some of them.
- And Mom… breathe.
You did it too.
The Senior Year Photos You Don’t Want to Forget
Professional senior portraits are important to me — obviously.
But they’re only one piece of senior year.
Some of the photographs you’re going to treasure most will be taken on your phone.
So here’s my unofficial photo checklist:
- First day of senior year
- Senior Sunrise
- Homecoming
- Friday night football games
- Senior Night
- Favorite teacher or coach
- Best friends
- Your senior’s car
- Their bedroom before they move out
- College or next-step announcement
- Prom
- Cap and gown
- Senior Sunset
- Graduation rehearsal
- Graduation morning
- Walking into graduation
- Family at graduation
- Grandparents
- Siblings
- The celebration afterward
- One last picture in front of their high school
And please don’t wait until everything is “perfect.”
Messy bedrooms count.
Wrinkled jerseys count.
Bad phone lighting counts.
The everyday moments count.

I know there’s a lot to do this year.
I know there are forms to fill out and deadlines to remember and checks to write and appointments to schedule.
But every once in a while, forget the checklist.
Look at your kid.
Go to the game.
Take the picture.
Let them have their friends over even though they’re loud.
Stay up when they come home from the dance so you can hear about it.
Take them to lunch.
Hug them when they’ll let you.
Because somewhere between Senior Sunrise and graduation night, this year is going to go faster than either of you expects.
