Choosing the right Granite Bay Senior Photographer is about so much more than finding someone who can take a pretty picture. Your photographer’s style, locations, editing, personality and the experience they provide all play a part in how your senior pictures will look — and how you’ll feel when you look back at them years from now.
At first, senior pictures can feel pretty simple.
Find a photographer. Pick a date. Show up. Take some pretty pictures.

After photographing high school seniors for more than 15 years, here is the biggest thing I want families to know:
There isn’t one photographer who is right for everyone.
The goal is to find the photographer who is right for your senior.
Because these aren’t just pictures you need to check off the senior-year list. This is your kid at 17 or 18. Their style. Their personality. The hobbies they’ve spent years doing. The smile you know by heart. And one of the last big milestones before graduation changes everything.
So before you book your senior pictures, here are a few things I think every Granite Bay family should consider.
Start With a Photography Style You Actually Love
This is the first thing I would look at when choosing a Granite Bay senior photographer.
Don’t choose a photographer because your friend used them or because they’re the closest photographer to your house.
Look at their work.
Do you love the colors?
Does the skin look natural?
Do you like the way they use light?
Are their images bright and colorful, soft and neutral, dark and moody, editorial, traditional or somewhere in between?
Most importantly, can you picture your senior in those photographs?
My work is known for bold color, gorgeous golden light and images that feel happy and alive. I love movement, beautiful Northern California scenery and outfits that POP against a location.
That isn’t going to be everyone’s style — and that’s okay.
Your photographer’s portfolio should make you stop scrolling and think, YES. I want my senior pictures to look like that.
That is a much better reason to book someone than simply choosing whoever happens to be available.
Look at More Than Their Best Instagram Photos
Instagram is a great place to discover photographers, but don’t stop there.
Visit their website. Look through full blog posts and multiple sessions. Pay attention to whether their work is consistent.
Anyone can post five beautiful photographs.
You want to know what an entire senior experience looks like.
Can they photograph someone standing, sitting and moving?
Can they create variety?
Do they photograph close-ups as beautifully as the big scenic images?
Can they work with different personalities, body types and styles?
Do their seniors look comfortable?
If you’re looking at Granite Bay senior photography, consistency matters. You should have a pretty good idea of what you’re going to receive before you ever step in front of the camera.
A photographer’s portfolio should give you confidence that the images you love aren’t the exception — they’re what that photographer consistently creates.
Your Location Should Feel Like YOU
This one is huge for me.
Your senior pictures do not have to happen in Granite Bay just because you live in Granite Bay.
Read that again.
Some of my favorite senior sessions happen because we leave the senior’s hometown and choose a location based completely on the look they want.
Maybe that’s a field with golden grass and mountains behind you.
Maybe it’s the lake.
Maybe you want downtown streets, rooftops and an urban feel.
Maybe you’re dreaming about wildflowers, the beach, the forest or something completely unexpected.
One of my favorite parts of planning senior pictures is matching the location to the senior, rather than trying to fit every senior into the same place.
I photograph seniors throughout the Greater Sacramento area and Northern California, so we’re definitely not limited to one little radius around Granite Bay.
Your location is part of the final photograph.
It should make sense with your clothes, your personality and the overall look you want your senior pictures to have.

This is something families don’t always know to ask about.
What happens after you book but before your senior session?
Are you completely on your own?

For my seniors, the experience begins long before we actually take a picture.

I want you to know what to bring, what photographs well, what colors will work with your location and how to create variety between outfits.
You shouldn’t be standing in your bedroom the night before your session with six outfits thrown across the bed wondering what in the world you’re supposed to wear.
That is part of what you’re hiring me for.
I like to say that I take homework off your list.
Senior year already comes with enough of it.
Make Sure Their Senior Pictures Actually Look Like Seniors
I want senior portraits to feel elevated and special.
But I also want you to recognize yourself.
Your senior pictures should look like the very best version of YOU — not like you’re trying to be someone ten years older.
That’s why connection matters so much.
I want to know what you love, what you wear, what you’ve spent your high school years doing and what makes you feel confident.
Bring the varsity jacket.
Bring the football.
Bring the guitar.
Bring your cap and gown.
Bring the college sweatshirt you worked so hard to earn.
And absolutely bring that incredible dress you would never have another excuse to wear.

You shouldn’t have to choose between the two.
Think About How You Want to Feel in Front of the Camera
This might matter even more than the location.
Most seniors I photograph aren’t professional models.
They don’t walk into their session already knowing exactly what to do with their hands, where to look or how to stand.
You aren’t supposed to know.
That’s my job.
When you’re researching photographers, look at the people in their photographs.
Do the poses feel natural?
Do you see real smiles?
Does everyone look exactly the same, or does each senior seem to have a little bit of their own personality?
Your photographer should be able to direct you without making everything feel overly posed.
I will tell you where to stand, what to do with your hands, where to look and when to move. And somewhere along the way, you stop thinking so much about being photographed.
That’s when we get the good stuff.
The little laugh.
The hair blowing.
The look over your shoulder.
The moments that don’t feel forced at all.
Don’t Forget About Mom
Yes, these are your senior pictures.
But I’m going to let you in on something after photographing seniors for all these years:
These pictures are for your mama, too.
She’s looking at you and seeing the preschooler, the first day of kindergarten, the missing front teeth, the sports practices, the homecomings and every version of you that somehow led to this one.
And now you’re graduating.
I understand that season because I’ve lived it with my own boys.
That’s also why I give families the option to use the beginning of the senior session for family photographs. Everyone is already dressed. Everyone is together. And it’s an opportunity to photograph your family during a season that is about to change very quickly.
You may be booking senior pictures because graduation is coming.
Mom is booking them because she knows how fast it came.

This is one of the biggest differences between photographers, and it’s worth understanding before you book.
What happens after the session?
Do you receive an online gallery?
Do you choose your favorites?
Are products available?
Does someone help you decide what size artwork will look right in your home?
Are albums available?
What about digital images?
