After over a decade behind the camera, capturing milestone moments for other families, this year I found myself on the other side.
It was JJ’s turn. My boy. My senior.
And suddenly, I wasn’t just a photographer—I was the mom preparing for one of the most meaningful photo sessions of my life.
Prepping for the Session
I’ve given my clients the same Senior Photography checklist for years, but now I was using it for my own son.
I ordered clothes weeks in advance, carefully coordinated each outfit using my guys’ style guide, and ironed every shirt. Each look went onto a hanger—ready to go.
Of course, JJ brought pieces that were 100% him:
- His worn-in cowboy boots
- His favorite baseball cap
- And his pride and joy—a 1963 Buick Riviera
We even packed extras—just like I tell all my families—because you never know what will inspire you in the moment.
Choosing the Location
There was never any question: Gibson Ranch.
It’s a place woven into our family story. I’ve taken our own family portraits there for years, so it felt perfect for this milestone.

When we pulled his Riviera into the field at sunset, I knew we were about to capture something special.
JJ kicked back on the hood, his cowboy boots in the dust, that relaxed grin on his face—and there it was. Him.
