I knew this location would be perfect for this session, and with careful planning and communication, we made her vision a reality.

Choosing the Perfect Location: Where Urban Meets Ballet

When this talented high school senior told me she wanted her dance senior photos to be unique and memorable, I immediately thought of Sutro Baths. The location, with its stunning ruins and ocean views, was the ideal setting to contrast her soft, graceful ballet movements against a raw, urban backdrop. It was an unusual choice, but that’s exactly what made it so special. The contrast of delicate ballet poses against weathered stone and crashing waves created striking images that captured the complexity and beauty of her art.

By embracing the unexpected and pairing two seemingly different elements — the serene beauty of ballet with the ruggedness of Sutro Baths — we were able to create a gallery of images that truly stood out.

Styling for the Session: Bringing the Vision to Life

Session preparation is key to a successful shoot, and I am proud of the way I communicate with my clients to bring their vision to life. For this session, we discussed every detail, from the location to the styling. We chose two different dresses to highlight different aspects of her personality and dance style.

Her first dress was a flowing, pastel ballet dress that complemented the softness of her movements. The second was a striking, deep-colored dress that brought a dramatic flair to the urban setting of the Sutro Baths. Each look told a different story, and we made sure to capture a variety of poses and expressions that reflected her passion for dance.

The Magic of Golden Hour: Dramatic Skies and Ballet Poses

We timed the session to take advantage of the golden hour, that magical time just before sunset. Even though the skies weren’t golden, they delivered something even more special — dramatic clouds that added an unexpected moodiness to the photos. The soft, diffused light and moody skies created an incredible atmosphere that made her dance senior photos feel even more powerful and dynamic.

The contrast between her graceful ballet poses and the dramatic backdrop was mesmerizing. It was a perfect example of how sometimes, unexpected weather conditions can add depth and emotion to a session.
